P001 → Project No. 1
Voyeurism is a public pool project located in the historical Sinsheimer Bros. Building in downtown San Luis Obispo. I completed this project in my fall quarter of 2019 at Cal Poly. The project was to be built utilizing the original front facade and to provide a public pool for locals and visitors in downtown San Luis Obispo. Voyeurism plays on the vulnerable state humans are in when gathered together in a setting meant for less than the usual amount of clothing. The process of walking from the front door to the pool in the back of the site emphasizes the vulnerable states we as people are in when exposing our bodies to the public.
From the front door, you are funneled into a narrow (3 feet wide and 12 feet tall) hallway that is visible to the public from Rose Alley through transparent glazing. On the other side of the hallway, frosted glazing shields the bathrooms, so only motion and basic human forms are visible from the hallway and outside. As the user reaches the end of the hallway, they enter a space of peace before they ultimately go into the public pool. This room is ramped and is the beginning of the experience of the water, as this room holds the same body of water as the exterior pool. As the user exits this room, they walk on the continuous downward sloping runway ramp that ends with the water level stopping at their mid-thigh, fully exposing them to the public eye. This is the last stage before the user is able to finally dive into the pool and end their voyeuristic experience.
